This was painted after a trip to Cligga Cove in January. The sun was low but intense when it broke through between squalls of freezing rain. It came from a sketch at the end of a session when my fingers were numb and I was packing up because the weather had turned, winds had risen and the temperature dropped.
Suddenly the sun broke through showing splinters of blinding light on the choppy surf.
I had acrylic ink pens on a pains grey ground and scribbled a quick sketch. I then retreated back to the studio and painted it onto a large canvas as my fingers thawed out.
