Joanna Commings

I was born in London. My father was an artist and I have been painting and drawing all my life.
Originally I concentrated on portraiture, for which I still take commissions, but my interest in landscape began with a move to North Cornwall in 2002, where I found the rugged scenery compelling and set out to try to capture it on canvas in all weathers and seasons. We lived in Cornwall for 14 years and although now living in Somerset, I continue to find the Cornish scenery inspiring and continue to visit and explore it in paint.

I am motivated by the changing effects of light on the landscape throughout the seasons: the movement and colour of the sea and timelessness of the cliffs. I try to convey what it feels like to be there, at that time on that day and I am increasingly drawn to a more abstract interpretation. I work mainly in acrylics, which I love for their versatility, on canvas, board or watercolour paper.
My work is exhibited at galleries in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Hampshire.
