James creates colourful and lyrical abstract acrylic paintings on canvas and paper. He enjoys the play between the abstract and the figurative, an element not always discernible. Paintings are worked over time, layering and removing paint, manipulating the colour and texture to make vital and exciting images.
As a student he rejected all figurative elements and in retrospect he admits that his paintings took him into a cup de sac – he went on to include photographic and film images in his work which ultimately led to a long career in the film industry. He has since returned to painting and is no longer afraid of using figurative or decorative elements in his paintings.
