Claudia Hocking

Drawing and observation is fundamental to Claudia, working quickly- sketching, scribbling loosely and freely with dry pastels is where she starts with a basic idea before refining on a larger scale with paints and inks focusing on creating texture, expressive marks and an everlasting interest in colour combinations in a contemporary way.

Claudia studied at Falmouth school of Art before specialising in textiles at Amersham designing patterns for fabrics before diversifying and working as a greeting card illustrator for many years for companies such as : The WWF, The Guide Dogs, Woodmansterne, Medici and PaperHouse.

Her work is very illustrative and the compositions are often a balance of linear forms and concentrated layers of colour which is applied with both thick and transparent layers of paint/pastel allowing for the underpainting to show through, but there is also a subtractive element to her work.

Claudia lives and works on the coast in South East Cornwall.
